Geology Days Field Trip: Tropical Seas and Volcanic Fire in Ancient New York

This trip has two stops that depict key intervals in the geological evolution of eastern New York. These sites are internationally well known and are located in an area that shows the abrupt transition into the western Appalachians. The Lester Park site records an earlier stable, “passive” continental margin with tropical limestones like the modern Bahamas’. Stark’s Knob shows a later “active” margin where the east Laurentia (ancient North America) margin was overrun by a volcanic island arc in the first orogeny (mountain-building episode of the Appalachians (locally Late Ordovician, see geological time handout) Both sites were donated to the N. Y. S. Regents in WW I. Their preservation has allowed continuing education and significant new research.

Transportation and lunch will be included. A coach bus will transport attendees from the hotel to Lester Park in Greenfield, NY at 12:00 PM, arriving around 1PM. Following  Dr. Landing's Presentation, we will travel to Stark's Knob in Schuylerville, NY for another presentation, then we will return to the hotel, arriving around 3:30PM. While this trip will be during Geology Days presentations, it will provide PDH credits near to those that would be received otherwise.

If you register for this event without being registered for Geology Days, you will be de-registered, and if your ticket will be refunded.
